IMMIGRATION JUSTICE COMMITTEE

Federal:

  • Our goals are to convince our federal legislators to pass legislation that is pro-immigrant and to oppose Trump’s mass deportation efforts and laws that strip away immigrants’ rights and dignity.

New York State Legislation:

  • NY for All Act: We are targeting Governor Hochul, Sente Majority Leader Stewart-Cousins, and NYS legislators to pass this act so that state officials will be restricted from enforcing federal immigration laws, transferring individuals to ICE, or sharing sensitive information with ICE and CBP, without a judicial warrant. This bill is hugely important as we face the Trump administration, since he has actively threatened to target immigrant communities in New York State. We are working with a larger coalition to pass this Act. We are engaging in rapid response actions in support of immigrants.
  • Access to Representation Act: This act establishes the right to representation for immigrants.
  • We will also work on rapid response with a greater coalition to pass Dignity Not Detention Act, Clemency Justice Act, and Coverage for All Act, all of which affect immigrants in NYS.

Local Westchester and Bronx actions:

  • We are working with local immigrant groups to convince local municipalities to pass written resolutions to protect local immigrants by not sharing information with ICE/CBP without a judicial warrant.
  • We are disseminating Know Your Rights for immigrants, as well as for employers, in local establishments such as libraries, delis, hair salons, car washes, food pantries, and other stores.
  • We are looking for volunteers to help local immigrant groups with direct assistance, such as lawyers doing pro bono applications helping immigrants prove they have been here for 2 years so that they can have due process rights, and helping with guardianship issues.
  • We plan to attend rallies, coalition meetings, and trainings. We will host postcard writing gatherings, and committee meetings in both Zoom and in person formats.
  • We are drafting letters to the editor templates and submitting letters to the editor regarding immigration issues.
  • We plan to involve the greater NYCD16/15 community by posting actions in our newsletter and by making presentations at our general meetings.
