CRIMINAL JUSTICE REFORM

Description of the Committee

Chairs: Steven Siebert, Beverly Borg
Email

Our goal is to mobilize NYCD16 Indivisible members on behalf of racial- and criminal-justice reform in NY State by following the lead of existing organizations, led by impacted people, as they work to counter a system of mass incarceration that focuses solely on punishment and not on restorative justice. These structures inordinately impact Black and Brown people, and they do so right in our own back yard – according to data just released by the Vera Institute of justice, 90.6% of all people who were convicted in (majority white) Westchester County now serving time in NY state prisons are people of color. We need to join with all New Yorkers to demand that meaningful racial- and criminal-justice reform be enacted this year, without further delay.

Our current activism involves working with RAPP, Release Aging People in Prison (see link below) and Decarcerate the Hudson Valley (a coalition of organizations working on local racial- and criminal-justice reform, currently without a web site). We can use our voices to urge Senate Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins to lead in enacting these vital criminal-justice reforms.
