Here’s the scorecard on who in Congress is actually giving their salaries to government employees currently working without pay, and who’s just grandstanding. Information is from Roll Call as of Jan. 5.
- These people are giving away their money to the government employees:
Nobody
Caveat: Sen. Jacky Rosen, D-Nevada said she’s giving to state organizations “aimed at helping survivors of sexual and domestic violence.” If those agencies receive federal funding, employee salaries (full or in part) that depend on federal funding would be affected. This gift may or may not count as going to federal employees.
- These people are giving away their money elsewhere: 6 Dems, 3 Republicans.
Note: It’s a nice tax deduction.
Sen. Richard Blumenthal, D-Connecticut: to Homes For The Brave, housing for homeless with an emphasis on veterans.
Sen. Mazie Hirono, D-Hawaii: to food banks n Oahu, Kauai, Maui, and the Island of Hawaii.
Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto, D-Nevada: Nevada charities
Sen. Tina Smith, D-Minnesota: The Advocates for Human Rights.
Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Massachusetts: to HIAS, a nonprofit that helps refugees.
Rep. Vern Buchanan, R-Florida: “to charity”
Rep. Kevin Hern, R-Oklahoma: to veterans’ groups
Rep. Brad Schneider, D-Illinois: “to charity”
- These people are taking deferred salaries—boo hoo. They’ll just have to put that new Jag on layaway.

*Fitzpatrick reintroduced a constitutional amendment aimed at preventing members of Congress from being paid if it fails to pass a budget. The effort would “dock pay for time without a budget as opposed to simply putting member salaries in escrow until end of term,” a spokesman said.
These people are despicable:
Sen. John Hoeven, R-North Dakota: giving to the North Dakota National Guard Foundation. Fact: The North Dakota National Guard Foundation is a non-profit organization, which has no paid employees and hires no professional fundraisers. It depends entirely on volunteer help. Nobody there is losing money because of the government shutdown. His “donation” is a shameless ploy for kudos and votes.
Rep. Bob Latta, R-Ohio: “Since Congress already passed a number of appropriations bill this year, 75% of our government, including our military, will be unaffected by the shutdown.”
Rep. Mark Walker, R-North Carolina: “As liberals refuse to secure our border and drag on this partial shutdown, they’re hurting the very people open border policies pressure the most: our Border Patrol agents.”
**Rep. Mark Meadows, R-North Carolina said stretches without pay are “actually part of what you do when you sign up for any public service position.” When civilian workers got angry, he was forced to change his mind.
Who knows what the rest of them are doing.
