Do not despair! Even though this may be the worst thing to happen since the 2016 “election” (a.k.a. con job), we still have a work-around.
Our attorney general and governor will probably find a way to protect New York women’s rights. Other AGs and governors in progressive states will probably do the same. Let’s hope there are enough federal judges to be willing to go to the mat.
What about women in the red states who need an abortion? It’s up to the rest of us to make sure they can have one. IMHO, this requires a three-fold approach:
1) Protect NY clinics and MDs who perform abortions, because if/when Roe v. Wade is overturned, and if Underwood and Cuomo have been able to protect our rights, those women will be heading here, and the Trumpers will be out in force trying to scare them away.
2) Organize freedom caravans: blue state women can give rides to women from red states. Busloads might be a bad idea, because unless they’re disguised as a church group, they’d probably be targeted by Trumpers, who might have no compunction about throwing Molotov cocktails. Individuals and organizations can raise funds to pay transportation costs for low-income women.
3) Vote out the people who voted to confirm Kavanaugh. That’s a “DUH,” but this long-term solution may be too long to wait for, if Trump’s puppets go on the attack. #1 & #2 might be the first priority.
Better for the Democrats to be prepared than be caught napping.
